If the level in the reservior is below the cool level mark the alarm will go more easly. As mentioned the sensor is on the front of the reservior. If the level goes down. It is possible to have a small leak that doesn't leave a trace. The lines that lead from the engine to the fire wall for the heater core can have a leak and since they are up higher coolant can escape as vapor. Even the water pump can leak only while running and you will never know it. How many miles on your car?
I recently replace the turbo in my car and it was difficault due to small work evelope, why are you wanting to replace. The following sight is very usefull and will show a turbo replacement and what is involved. I replaced mine due to oil level going down and blue smoke existing the exhaust while idling.
