I faced the same dilemma. We bought a 2003 SE 'vert off-lease and decided to get it CPO'd. Made a lot of sense to do so as a) the vert is an expensive car to maintain and b) GMAC subsidizes the financing when you buy CPO, if you choose to finance. We got 2.9%... so it became a no-brainer. I think they have the same deal going now.
We compared costs, and arrived at around $25/month in additional cost for the warranty when considering financing savings from the going 6% at the time.
Glad we did it. Here's why:
1) Soon had to have SID replaced. $450.
2) Car died on the highway Thursday. Dealer supplied tow and replacement car. Replaced crank position sensor, battery, fuel pump, and some other stuff. Also fixed roof rattle. Total cost, $1300. No charge.
3) Car idled rough a few months ago, had plugs replaced/throttle body cleaned and something else done. Couple hundred bucks, no charge.
Always got a replacement car when it was in the shop... Again, CPO the thing! I seem to remember paying about what you are being quoted...
Good luck,
Eric
