I'm near detroit, and the past few days were brutal as well. One day, it was -4F, another was 0, -1 on another. However, my morning commute is 6 minutes. I let the car warm up (~1.5 minutes) while I clear the windshield), then I drive slowly (well, at this temperature, I can't really drive more than 25-30miles either)
Anyway, after driving for ~6 minutes, my car is warm (engine oil temperature is ~8pm to 8:45pm, which is about as high as it goes...my oil temp gage doesn't go pass 50% ever, even on 100F days with AC on), and the cabin air is very warm. (I set it at 74F ACC).
I have a 2002 93SE with 120K miles. Original thermostat. I have ACC and I leave it on all the time. I notice that the AC doesn't blow much air until the engine is reasonably warm, which is after ~3 minutes after startup)
Did you car act differently last winter?
What I do notice is that at this temperature (near 0F), the heater fan sounds awful! I think the fan bearings on its last leg....
