I had piece of road debris hit the oil filter on my NG900 and the filter developed a pin hole. I simply put the car on ramps, spun off the old filter, and spun on a new filter. I lost maybe a 1/2 cup of oil.
That said, a 1/2 cup of oil can make a really big mess. So have the new filter ready to install and close at hand, have a drain pan and several rags handy, and when you get to that last couple threads when spinning off the old filter move quickly and surely to put the old filter in the drain pan and install the new filter.
