Not necessarily... What if the car requires a few hundreds in repair every year?(Like me) What if you have to have it towed every year or 2? Is it worth it?
I understand that most people drive less than 30 miles to and from work each day in the city, and probably have a second car in the family. In that case, keep it, and repair as needed.
However, if you are uncomfortable with fixing or paying for "minor repairs", or the risk of the car failing during a road trip or just the local interstate, dump it!!
People will tell you that "with proper care and maintainence", your car should run forever. However, how many people (heck, how many mechanic!) can truely say they do all the due dilligence?
Here are some of the things that can fail in your car at this age: (Note that I only list the ones that cost $$$ to fix and affect your drive/sanity)
engine failure due to sludge (can be diagnosed)
brakes (pads/rotor/caliper/master cylinder) (can be diagnosed easily)
exhaust/emission system (muffler, CAT, O2 sensor..) (not easy to catch)
turbo (!!!)
fuel pump (it may be intermitten...it might not be)
heated seat(s)
A/C heater fan/controller (can be DIY)
AC compressor
PS steering system
water pump
alternator/battery
(the items above can take out the serp belt and pulleys..)
DI casette
suspension (big $$$ there...but depending on how you drive...you may not even notice anything...)
other things in the drive line (CV joints, wheel bearings)
little niggles like door lock, power windows, SID, dislay panel, etc...are not cheap/easy to fix!)
