At a loss about oil leak (long)

Okay, just spent the past hour under the car and this is what I found. No burning oil, no blow by from the dipstick, no excess oil coming from or around the oil filter or the turbo pick up tube. The majority of the oil looks like is coming from around the center axle where it goes in to the tranny. There is oil all of the bottom of the starter and the center axle. I also found a rubber tube the goes from the oil pan (right above the dipstick) to the engine block, it was deteriated and had small crack, when I was looking at it, it became a big hole. It seems that it just transfers moisture from the oil pan back to the engine block. I also noticed that I should replace the o-ring on the dip stick, although there is no obviously leak.
Odd thing, I let it run while I got under it and looked for the leak and couldn't find any obvious drips. Never changed gears, so I am wondering if there is an obvious connection (that I am not getting) between the center axle/transmission and the leak, I am guessing yes, but need some help as to what exactly I am dealing with?
