bump: Starter grounding strap

Sorry to bump this up, but it appears the grounding strap from the starter solenoid is corroded and needs replacing on my 2000' 9-3. Is the lower part of that strap soldered on the starter housing just to ground it or what? It's difficult to see it, since I have my face smashed against the oil filler trying to have a peek.
I even tried to bypass it by running a grounding wire from that bolt back to the battery but then the starter didn't turn at all, not sure why. Thanks everyone.
