Here is how I did it this morning:
Use a small (watchmaker type) flat bladed screwdriver.
The tabs that retain the back cover are on the sides of the cover not the top and bottom. One tab is in the center of the side next to the "C" in the word Canada. Two tabs are on the other side - one at the top corner, and one about one half inch up from the bottom corner.
Your thin blded screwdriver must be thin enough to fit in the seam between the cover and the body. Push it into the center of the side with two tabs and pry the cover toward the center and outward. You should be able to see the two tab as you pry up. Be gentle and get the two tabs disengaged. When they are disengaged go to the center of the other side, insert the screwdriver in the seam and pry towards the center to disengage the single tab. If you got his far, removing the battery and re-installing the cover will be intuitive.
This method will leave some small scars in the main body along the seam, but after bouncing around in your pocket for a few years, they key probably is beat up enough so that you will not notice them.
When you have the back off you wll be able to see the small hole in the side opposite the single tab, that is there to allow the tab to be depressed to remove the back, but it just doesn't seem to work as well as the method I described.
