with 125k driven on Northeast roads. Old shocks showed no noticeable leaking, but ride quaility had diminished through the years I own car [original owner]. Front end felt loose.
Replaced with Bilstein Tourings. Also changed strut mounts and thrust bearings. On disasembly of both fronts and rears, I noticed that shocks were easily compressed with strength of one arm, though shocks were not completely dead. The new Bilsteins required effort of both arms and leverage to compress. Rebound was also less forceful. Old mounts were ok shape, but thrust bearings were gone. Ball bearings fell out on disassembly.
After replacement of front inserts, car felt almost like day I drove out of showroom. Firm and glided over bumps with ease. Loose front end was gone -presume shocks' rebound eliminated oscillation. Also, steering was effortless and more precise -presume new bearings a lot helped here.
Rear shocks replacement offered somewhat less noticeable difference.
My conclusion. Changing out was well worth effort. I planned to drive to 200k, so replacement at 125k was due.
