This is in response to an earlier thread but I thought I'd share my experience. I couldn't find anything to answer the question of what to do with a 5 door rack OEM rack with a two door hatchback. Someone actually suggested cutting the metal. YIKES!
After looking at the two pins the 5-door Thule made rear rack(two on each side for the rear rack whose length is slightly longer than the front as well as being indicated by a symbol of a car with an arrow pointing on whether it is to be used for the rear or front) I noticed that the "pins" were secured by bolt and a nut against the rubber gasket material that separated the pass rear window panel from the roof. Using a 10mm wrench, I undid the nuts so that the bolts were unscrewed from the pin holes for both sides of the car. Using a pry bar gingerly with a towel on it I pryed back gently the rear window panel from the roof panel and using a needle nose removed the bolt and 10mm nut exposing the exact same holes that are in the front. The holes matched perfectly, and the rear rack went on snugly. I suspect (but don't know because I have never seen the 3 door OEM rear rack that the pins were used to secure the rack from theft?
I have a 98 Saab SE Turbo. I posted this as the Thule made Saab logo racks work great (no need for a lock as the door keeps them from being hijacked albeit technically my rear rack could be stolen, but frankly most theives aren't slick but generally the only tool in their criminal toolbox is brute force) and probably available used (I bought mine from that internet free shopping service that begins with a c and ends with a t for $15). Anyone searching this fine forum may think that this info would be useful, or maybe there is another reason that the setup using the pins is better? Thanks.
