On your 1999 9-3 convertible the emblems from a 2001-2003 vert should all fit. (I believe the logo change actually happened in Aug. 2000) Some of the other models had some size changes, but the 'verts remained virtually identical (sheet-metal wise) from 1999-2003.
Removing the rear emblem on the 'vert is a little harder than most, as the emblem itself is curved more at the top to match the deck lid. Having the bend in it seems to help it adhere better ... great news, huh? The floss thing is a good suggestion, but wrap the ends around a couple of pencils or something so you don't kill your fingers.
Also, my hood emblem and deck emblem both disintegrated within weeks of each other ... I'm thinking about switching to the newer emblems as well, but the only logo I haven't found a replacement for is the one on the steering wheel.
