I've have a problem for some time with my '99 9-3 base (80k) when driving roads with uneven surfaces. When I'm on nice, smooth suburban roads the steering seems tight and the suspension seems fine. But when driving on the highway, or other roads with uneven surfaces or wheel ruts, my car is thrown from side to side like I'm driving with a flat tire. That is, one or both wheels have a mind of their own and don't want to obey orders from the steering wheel! The only mods to the car are a steering rack brace, 16" wheels, and upgraded rear antisway bar.
Something is definately loose, but my cursory check of linkages, struts, bushing, mounts, etc., didn't find anything obviously wrong. Is this just a case of worn struts and other parts? The strut mount seems fine, but it is hard to inspect it with the metal cover on it. When I grab the left spring and shake it I notice looseness coming from above, but the top of the insert at the strut mount doesn't show any movement. Bearing problem? Struts are soft and slightly bouncy.
I took it to a respected indy in Seattle who - for $50 and a few hours of my time - said it was my tires. I got new Kuhmo's (I needed tires anyway) which didn't make any difference on this specific issue, but were definately an improvement in other regards over the ContiExtremes. I've researched many threads on this topic, but it seems like the common answer it to tear down the front end and start replacing stock parts with better aftermarket parts because the stock suspension is inherently soft.
Otherwise, I have had ZERO problems with the 9-3 over more than four years of ownership (knock on wood).
