Recently tore apart a <100,000 mile 2.3L from a 1996 NG900 and also found a slack balance chain. Tiny balance chain like a chain saw blade had cut substantial grooves into its guides and probably stretched, to the point that its chain tensioner couldn't take up slack any longer. Strangely, tensioner had not fully extended. Balance chain had started to wear inside bottom of timing cover where it goes around crankshaft sprocket. Aluminum shavings sucked up from sump through the clean pickup tube screen had scored the oil over-pressure relief valve aluminum piston. The person had wrecked the car, before the engine bearings could get toasted and starved from low oil pressure. This was on an engine that had Saab blue oil filter and had run synthetic oil with no oil breakdown. I think GM really deserves an award for bad design choices and/or planned obsolescence with this engine. Putting this back together, it won't have any balance chain, and I'll just live with the extra vibration and replace engine mounts.
