Re: L-F axle seal in gearbox - special tools? Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: L-F axle seal in gearbox - special tools?, JimBlake ![]() ![]() |
Usually, the reason why the seal starts to leak is because the play in the bronze bushing inside differential is too great. The drive shaft is suppose to have some play up and down due to the design called free floating shaft but sometimes, the play is too much and it wears out the seal prematurely.
I just use the tip of a sturdy prybar to pry the complete drive shaft out but it needs to be done with finess so that the C-clip let go.
After that it is easiest to remove the seal housing and change the seal and o-ring on the bench but you need to be careful since it is shims behind the housing for the differential bearing and you don't want to loose those.
Saab have a tool (puller) to replace that bronze bushing inside but they specifically said in a memo that the tool is not imported to US due to the difficult nature of replacing that bushing.
I have heard som rumors of people trying to make a tool here but have not heard any updates yet about the progress.
If you replace the seal it will probably be fine for awhile, until the slop in driveshaft wear it out again.
