I'm not a mechanic, but I changed my own engine & clutch and when I changed my trans oil on my '94 900S there was enough metallic "paste" on the plug magnet to glam eye-shadow the entire Rockettes squad. My trans is fine. That sounds like the Jiffy-Lube guys showing you how 'dirty' the air filter is.
Possibilities: Old, inferior shift linkage
I think there's a TSB on the NG900 shift linkage, and I know thesaabsite.com addresses this thoroughly at: http://www.thesaabsite.com/900new/NG900manualtransmissionparts.htm
My 900 had the upgrade before I bought it. The (indy, not Saab) dealer dude said it didn't go into reverse so they replaced the linkage. Well, I broke that linkage by not disconnecting it before I dropped the subframe. LUCKILY, I found a guy parting out a 9-3 on Craig'sList and got the part for $23 delivered. It's $250 list.
You could try disconnecting your linkage and see if you can shift it into reverse by hand. There's info out there under 'trans removal' that may help you. But, if you get under there it'll explain itself: loosen the clamp nut (15mm) on the trans-shift-rod and have a helper work the gear shift to disconnect the linkage. (There's a locking pin method in all official instructions, I don't know if that is necessary cuz I broke my linkage first.) Then just think it out... hmmm clockwise-turn push rod 'in' should be reverse, right? Reconnecting linkage the opposite of removal(ha, ha). Put it in a gear you know: first gear=counter-clockwise, rod out.Have your helper work the gear shift to that position, tighten clamp nut. Work through the gears for feel. You may have to adjust later, I do. 1st & 2nd are a bit too close to my knee and some time need to be coaxed in or I'll be driving in 4th when I thought I chose 2nd. just gotta tweak the rod a degree or two clockwise... Good Luck.
