99's are as awesome and trouble free as any other saab year and make. Saab is second to last in this year's ratings of car reliability.
The engines aren't prone to sludge any more than any other car. If the ownser(s)changed the oil every 3 to 5k miles, you won't find sludge. Saab mistakenly put in their maintenance schedule oil changes every 10k and so DUH, sludge developed for those that careless with their toys.
The thing to AVOID is buying a car that's had a blown head gasket--and Saab's are prone.
Mine overheated on the owner before me--over the 3rd and 4th cylinders that eventually failed. 20,000 miles after purchase the engine seized on me in the left lane of a 6-lane interstate. Luckily I was going 90 and had enough momentum to weave through traffic to the shoulder.
Hope you found a good car. When saabs aren't in the shop they are a helluva a lot of fun (why I replacd my engine to keep mine and the fun going)!
good luck!
