evaporator/mechanic trouble

About a year ago my '98 900 wasn't blowing cold and a recharge lasted about a month. I had it sniffed at that time and found it to have a bad evaporator. A couple of days ago I decided to finally get it fixed knowing the hefty price. The guy I took it to said that Saab stopped making the evaporator for this car and had to use newer model part. He also said he would have to use an adapter to make the new part work. He assured me it was a Saab part. Next, the adapter that he got from his "supplier" was incorrect, so he put me off over the weekend. Here I am with no car, so I called the dealer and the parts department tells me they have never heard of such a thing and they have access to 100 such evaporators. Further, their tech says he has never heard of an adapter for an oem part for this car. The price tag is coming in at over $1200 for this fix. Long story short, I believe I am getting a royal screwing for a aft part that should be $300 not $800. What do you think?
