I do not believe it is a good idea to be driving around in a car that needs repairs. O2 sensors for example control fuel mixture so your car could pollute more. Operating cost for fuel could be higher if the engine runs rich; if it runs lean, you could burn valves. Your catalytic converter could be damaged. In most states, you car will not pass inspection with any warning lights on. You could become stranded when another code is set and you miss it.
But a code being set does not necessarily mean that a sensor is bad. How about this concept! The condition that the sensor in question is monitoring is outside its perimeters. Codes point the technician to procedures to troubleshoot the condition and may or may not conclude with the replacement of a sensor. These are just a few reasons. Expensive investments require maintenance.
