Fix it or Junk It? Help me decide...

Well, my 94 900 SE (the V-6 flavor) has finally given up the ghost. It has 187,000 K miles on it and the innards of the manual transmission let go. My trusted SAAB mechanic tells me its $800 for a rebuild tranny, and another $800 or so in labor. In addition, its due for a new timing belt. This is another $500 or so to do. The internals of the climate control system are messed up, its stuck in defrost and this also needs attention. Add in the fact that its seem hard use in the interior (I have 3 kids) and its showing a lot of interior wear and its time for a new car. (I am most likely getting a 9-5 Aero... but I digress.)
I've owned this car from new and it has served me well. I have a few choices as I see it. Donate it. Or since its not going to be a daily driver, fix it at my leisure with an eye to having it around for a couple more years so that my oldest can learn to drive on it after I've fixed it. If it were a 4 cylinder, I'm pretty sure I'd fix it. After reading all the horror stories about the V-6 however, I am thinking fixing this might be throwing good money after bad.
Hopefully some of you more mechanically inclined folks can share some wisdom with me.
Thanks.....
