northeastern winters. Everytime I work on the car, I curse those in the south and west that do not have to deal with the corrosion/rust... lucky ducks. Basically the calipers were seized, and the drum-brake parking brake had fused partially on. This caused quite a bit of wear to the inner part of the rotor 'hat,' to the point I could not get the rotor off, despite things moving freely. Bang bang and it popped off along with a piece of the parking brake shoe.

And the however did I do this, I try and try to consider myself a mild mechanic (haven't attempted engine work, or something "major"), and save a few pennies. More like I get learning experiences. This is actually my second time (first was four years ago or so) doing the rears. This is why I do not know how this happened.

I used my torque wrench, set properly, as this had happened to a front caliper of mine. Fortunately then it was only one of the bolts, and not both. I was extra careful to make sure they were on tight enough. Drove it fine for a week until the way back from my honeymoon. Getting a mild squeal that I thought was just the pad floating a bit and needed more antisqueal. Planned on doing it when I got back (next day or so). However, three blocks from my house, loud grinding which was the caliper having come free, rotated fully on the rotor, and hanging off, grinding on the rim. Spinning around it also crumpled the backing plate that everything bolts on to.

I think it's time for a CPO.

Junkyards in the area, all but one, have been offended we even ask (Buffalo-area). The one that was of help called for a day and a half. He stated he failed, and that they were dealer-only parts. I would've thought one of them, or someone would have a car sitting around, probably rusting away. Undo the bolts, send them and the "plate," and maybe take off that backing plate as well. Oh well.

Finally got to Goldwing, and they are checking and will send me an email. Thanks.

Sean
