OK, I replaced both front strut inserts & rear shocks with Sachs "Super Touring" OE replacements from eEuroparts. I pretty much followed Dip's instructions for the work on my '99 9³.
For each side I undid the tie rod end & swaybar link but left the ball joint alone & removed hub/strut assy with the control arm still attached to it. I still removed the bolt from the stanchion arm to get it to drop down a bit, but I left the arm in the car's frame when I removed the strut assy.
The only argumentative bits were the swaybar links. The nuts pretty well trashed the threads on both links & the bushings were hard & had embedded a lot of gravel bits. When I reassembled everything I greased these old bushings with Teflon grease. I was able to reuse the links (which was good 'cuz I had not bought replacements), but the threads are so shot that I may have to cut them off next time.
I used an impact wrench to secure the strut inserts' top nuts after I lowered the car. It's a cheap impact wrench ($30 new from Advanced Auto Parts) & only uses 90 psi & supposedly generates 230 ft/lbs of torque. There are 4 settings on the wrench but nothing in the instructions to tell me the limit of each setting. I tightened the nuts until they stopped turning, since that was the impression I was given of how to do it by one of the previous posters.
On the rear shocks, the large concave washer on top of the upper rubber bushing was upside down when I went to take off the old shocks. (Its cupped side was up, making it harder to fit a wrench to the nut & allowing the rubber bushing to squish out & up. (Sorta like setting the bottom of a small bowl onto a bagel rather than turning the bowl over to capture the top of the bagel.)) When I installed the new shocks I flipped this top washer over so that it cupped the top of the upper rubber bushing.
Now I'm getting an occassional pop on some low speed turns. It sounds like it's probably coming from the front end. I'm wondering if it's from the trashed swaybar links or too-tight top nuts or flipped rear washers or possibly something else? I've checked the locknuts on the links & they don't appear to have moved at all. I haven't done any rework yet.
Anyone have any similar experiences, or ideas on what may be causing this new pop?
