The resistor is located off the fan motor on the fan body. If the resistor fails, then the fan usually only works on high speed. This is what happened to me, and it killed my AC compressor.
Some have replaced the resistor, search the board for more info. I replaced the fan assembly for big $'s, as I could not have the car down for that long.
In your case, I would certainly change the thermostat if it has not been done. Not too bad DIY. Search the board for more info.
