OK, I know there's tons of information available on the board about our stereo systems but I seem to be going in the wrong direction and need some sound advise.

2000 Viggen - I was one of the few who thought the stock system sounded adequate and was happy to leave things stock to maintain the use of the steering wheel controls and the clean look. Over the past year the speakers have been blowing one by one until I was down to the two dash speakers and one rear deck speaker. I felt like I was listening to headphones. I thought I'd upgrade to some nice Polk Audio's after visiting Crutchfield and thoroughly testing out all of the brands that fit our cars based on sound quality, price, and the fact that they are certified for marine use (the rears have a tendancy to catch water when the rear hatch is opened).

The speakers look great and I was really anticipating the improvement in sound over the stock speakers. Installation was a breeze, but when I finished I was nothing other than disappointed. The system sounds completely anemic and weak. While a little cleaner and brighter than the stock speakers, there's absolutely no bass or even mid-range and the sound is not full in any way. I checked polarity and everything seems fine. The Polk's I chose are 4 ohm and I am contemplating one of the following options and need some advise:

1. Switch the 4 ohm Polk's for 2 ohm Infinty speakers. Would using 2 ohm speakers make that much difference?

2. Bite the bullet and add an aftermarket amp to power all of the new Polks and ditch the stock amp for the front door speakers.

It sounds ridiculous, but at this point I'd rather replace the stock speakers in-kind - cardboard, foam and all. I would probably go this route if the dealer didn't want WAY more for their speakers than Polk, Infinity, or just about anybody else is asking for a much better product. They're simply better matched to the lower power output of the stock head unit and amp.

Thanks in advance for your input. I'm simply shooting in the dark here and thought I'd better ask somebody who knows what they're doing before I waste too much more time and money.
