I'll just back up what others have already said. Change the oil with good stuff, Amzoil, Red Line, Rotella-Shell etc every 4K or 5K miles. I would recommend the PCV #6 update as this should reduce sludging.
The pistons are a bit marginal in design and appear to crack easily under very lean conditions. But the root problem seems to be the AMM or AFM going out of spec. I agree with Turbo00 to change it every 70K miles. I problably would not use any air filter that requires oiling. The stock air filters are very good. Also it wouldn't hurt to retorque and/or replace the headbolts with the newer ones.
