fuel pump replacement-thru the floor Posted by Don M [Email] ![]() ![]() |
In May dchmiele1992 posted an informative bit about replacing his fuel pump using the "drop the tank method". For those who would rather get it from the top, my experience here may be helpful. My car is a '99 9.3.
Unlike my 9-5, there is no access hole through the floor from which you can withdraw the pump. There is a 4" plugged hole which you'll notice when you lift the seat and the pre-cut carpet flap but it's not over the pump. But it will help you in pushing the wires out of the way and by looking through it you will be just able to see the edge of the pump retainer ring.
On my '99 9.3, to cut a hole directly over the pump what I did was to trace a 7" kitchen bowl centered directly over the center of the floor hump and placed so that the diameter will intersect with a small quarter inch plugged hole towards the front of the car,(You'll see this when you cut back the carpet.) and about a half inch from the edge of the 4' access hole. What I did first was to cut a carpet flap about 9" long by 8" wide, hinged toward the front, starting just behind the seat hinge line.
After I replaced the pump, I covered the hole with an oversize piece of sheet aluminum and sealed it with weather stripping foam and duct tape.
I don't know much about metalworking but I did a pretty neat job using compound sheet metal shears. Make sure you get the kind for cutting a circle and not a straight line.
