Here's some food for thought. I had the dreaded vibration under acceleration problem. Ok crusing, but bad under load up a highway hill. Steering wheel bouncing side to side noticably.
I had replaced the wheels and tires a few years ago with Conti Extremes and Borbets. Great tire in Summer and Winter. Problem appeared a year or so later. Had the Conti's carefully re-balanced on a dynamic machine by a guru. Some help, but still bad. Borbet's got beat up and out of round so I replaced them with BBS's. Dynamic balance. It helped some. Had them done on a Hunter GSP9700. One rear tire was a little out but the tire guy said it was not much of an issue (and it was on the rear). The GSP9700 I got rid of all vibrations except the acceleration vibraation: 75% still there.
Local Saab indy (very respected) was sure it was the hydraulic bushings vibrating under heavy load. A non-saab motorsports guy I used thought it might be the ball joints. Other posts here had me worried about the inner drivers and other drive shaft, tripod, and tranny bearing issues. I also thought it might be engine vibration under highway load, or an engine / tranny mount under load.
Well, last week bought a set of Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S. New version of the Pilot, getting rave reviews at Tirerack. Went for them since I know Mich are the roundest tires out there and people love these tires. Unlike the old Pilots. Had them done on the Hunter GSP9700.
Guess what? Vibration all gone. Smooth as silk accelerating. So, it was the tires. They were fine otherwise and I would not believe it if I was not part of this process myself. I was sure it was mechanical. It was a tire issue. Go figure.
