Hazard lights flash rapidly when ignition is shut off

Hi, I have a 1999 9-3SE. Just came back from a 2-week vacation, and after a relatively short ride I turn off the engine, take out the key and the hazard lights start flashing at about twice the normal rate. Put the ignition back on and the noise and flashing stops, turn off the ignition and everything is fine until I take my foot off the clutch or brake pedals.
I decide to take out the direction indicator fuse (#2 on the side of the dashboard), put it back in the next day and everything seems fine. I've read through past messages and have found posts concerning the hazards flashing randomly when the engine is running, but that is not quite the problem I'm experiencing.
My question: should I bring the car in right now or should I wait until the problem reappears? Cash is short right now and I would like to avoid repair costs if at all possible... Are there risks the hazards could come on randomly and drain the battery (ie. leave me stranded)?
BTW, I have the "Service Theft Alarm" message coming on at startup ever since I bought the car about 18 months ago, my indy says it's likely just a question of replacing the batteries in the TWICE unit (he actually suggests replacing the unit itself). Thanks for any help.
