long, like 6 or 7 feet long belt which winds its way between the engine crankshaft pully, the AC compressor, alternator power steering pump and the waterpump too. The path is so convoluted when compared with the old-style multiple belts to drive these accesory items that when this type of belt was introduced it became known as "serpentine". On our cars when the belt gets old or the idler pullies fail (also due to old age) to belt shreds and none of the accesories get turned. This causes lots of warning lights and the rapid overheating you describe. Here's a link to a pic from the passenger side looking thru the fender, the water pump is top right pully. You should be able to see the belt when looking at the top of your engine, if it is still there we need to look at some other things.
Good luck,
John
