Ok, so I got a friend to turn the wheel while I held onto various steering and suspension components. The steering rack seems solid. Nothing around the control arm and sway bar. Feeling the clunk it decently along the tie rod. However, I just replaced the ends -- hoping that was the issue and it was not (although my steering feel is not much tighter now).
Overall, I do feel it the most by touching the strut mounts. However, the mounts themselves dot not have the typical play that indicates a failure. The struts, mounts, and bearing were replaced last year and this clunking started soon afterwards. It feels like an issue on both sides...depending on which direction the wheel is turned.
Does it make sense that the bearings are bad? Could the mechanic have overtighten the system that might have induced early bearing failure? Is there a nut that I can easily loosen to see if it makes a different w/o pulling the strut? If so, what it the torque requirement? I think the mechanic just used air tools and did not bother with torque specs. I'd hate to pay for an indie pull the system without a strong indication that the bearings (or mounts) are the problem.
thanks
joe
