It's hard to see and feel in the bottom, the top is totally off limits.
Not sure what car you have. On the bottom on an NG900, the end of the spring is the same diameter as the coil. The end is supposed to fit in a little notch in the seat. You may be able to see and feel that. On 9~3, the front is tapered and I'm not sure how it fits to the seat.
I would think a better check is the feel test first. If a friend turns the wheel, you may be able to feel the spring snapping (thunk) and ringing a litle bit. That might help pin it down.
