How to remove upper suport panel?

Well, my son totalled my 1998 900SE (rear-ended a tourist) the other day and we are collecting parts to put it back together. The body shop will reduce our bill by $400 if I can supply the upper support panel (the cross member that holds the top and sides of the radiator in place, spanning fender to fender). Luckily, I have a 1997 parts car with a good front end. I have removed the intercooler and all a/c and radiator hoses, etc. and plan to take the member and the radiator, drier and condenser out as one unit. BUT, it seems to be spot welded in two places on each side. What is the best method of breaking these welds without mangling the tabs on the unit? Has anyone ever removed this member before? Thanks for your help! I am trying to resist my usual method of bulling my way through.
