You can adjust the two rubber stops for the tail gate so that they help push open the hatch before the lock motor closes the latch again.
That's usually what's the problem.
The lock/latch motor only operates long enough so that the hatch pops open, but if the two rubber stops have gotten tired, it doesn't lift the hatch far enough to release.
