Some say the 9-5 has been more reliable, but harder to DIY when the time comes. I have driven 9-5's, and have an 00 9-3 SE with 113k on it now. This car has been the most reliable of 6 Saabs I have had to date and I am quite pleased with it.
Here is the way I see it. If you need the hatchback utility, get the 9-3 SE. If you dont, and a sedan style car with a trunk will do, get the 9-5 Aero. If you are over six feet tall you will have a bit more headroom in the 9-3. If you routinely carry more than 2 passengers, get the 9-5, it has a more spacious rear seat. If you want the best ride quality - get the 9-5, the suspension is a bit better thought out and you wont have to replace it at 100-125k. If max performance is desired find a good 9-3 Viggen (I never could, all the ones I had found were beat up, Flight Academy cars or extensively modified).
At any rate stick to the Aero model of the 9-5 and the SE model of the 9-3. This were upmarket cars loaded with goodies that have proven to be both useful and reliable. The automatics in these cars are fine, work well with the higher powered motors and are plenty durable. That is a lot to say for a guy that has had nothing but manual transmissions in all his Saabs.
