So I finally got around to replacing my front (passenger) engine mount today and have what seems to me to be a big problem.
A little history:
- had all 3 engine mounts replaced under CPO warranty: June, 2006
- took car back because front (passenger side) engine mount was clunking: August 2006
- diagnosis was that the cause of the noise was aftermarket brakes, was charged $150 to tighten rotor shields (I knew that wasn't the cause)
- noise still there
- warranty period ends
- negotiated with the service manager that they would look at the engine mount again, never did get them to agree to refund money for bogus brake diagnosis
- dealership changed ownership (3rd owners in 2 years), I give up dealing with them and decide to just take care of it myself.
So like I said, I finally get a replacement front mount and go to put it in today. Everything goes great until I go to put loctite on one of the bolts that goes into the unibody and notice the threads are all mangled. Sure enough, I thread it in, go to torque it, and it's stripped and won't take the torque. I try the other bolt (threads are in good shape) in that location to see if maybe it's just the bolt that's damaged: nope, it's definitely the female part.
So, I got it all back together with one bolt properly torqued, the hex bolt in the middle properly torqued, and the other bolt not torqued down enough (but with loctite).
Questions:
- Do I go back to the dealership (under new ownership with new service manger, etc.) more than a year after the repair was done where they damaged the bolt and mounting hole? It kind of seems like a waste of time to me.
- What solutions are there for the problem? Drill out the threads & tap for new threads? Helicoil? Through-bolt it?
This is why I swore that as long as I live here, I won't be buying another Saab that I would have to take to the dealer for warranty service.
Thoughts? Advice?
