Strange Elec Issues light relay vibration & no-start!

Hi All,
My wife drove our 96 900S home from work yesterday with no problems. When she got back in later that night, the car wouldn't start. No clicking as if it were a dead battery, no attempt to turn over, just nothing. The dashboard lights turned on, but we didn't notice any headlights. After the ignition switch was turned from start to off, there was a rapid ticking/clicking like an alarm clock for a few seconds from under the hood.
Today, I tried to jump start the car and got it to give me a few clicks like it was trying to start, so I think it's a dead (although only 6 mos old) battery. I've got it charging now. But, after I disconnected the jumper cables, the 'alarm clock' noise was there and went on and on. I removed the cover of the under the hood fuse box and touched the relays until I felt the headlight (orange) relay vibrating. I removed it as I thought this was the source of the problem, and the noise stopped. I have not attempted to start the car w/o the relay installed since the battery's charging.
So, my question is: Is it possible that this relay is the source of a battery drain? Or the manifestation of bigger problems? I am not car savvy, with the help of this board, I have replaced S-belts, alternators and other minor things, but I do not think (or really wish to) I can trouble shoot this. What I'm hoping is that this is a simple thing that I can diagnose or fix by following some directions. That's really the limit of my car intelligence... So, anyone have any ideas? Or should I take the car to a mechanic?
Thanks for your help!
