I just got and read the owner's manual for my newly-purchesed '96 NG900 SEt convertible. In the section on the automatic transmission, they say don't downshift into 1st at more than 90mph or 150kph. (page 91) That's the scariest thing I can imagine doing....going 90 and downshifting to 1st. The damned-thing must shoot straight to red-line; I can barely imagine dropping it into 2nd at that speed. Yikes.....
For a guy who rarely goes over 3500 rpm, that's downright scary. In my old c900t, I think I rev'd over 4200rpm maybe three or four times in 250k-miles and ten years, and I think I only ONCE went over 4500rpm-ever avoiding a truck on the NJ Turnpike. And the c900t were higher-geared with 3-speed automatics...but they had lot's of low-end torque. I have noticed that the "new" NG900's turbo seem to be more evident once the revs start to climb; but I haven't really pushed it over 3500rpm yet, nor used full-throttle in the sport-mode either.
The one thing that I do miss in a Saab is my old M-Benz' shift-gate where 3rd and drive where on the same notch...rather than drive and neutral. I always worry about shoving the shifter from third into neutral rather than drive when manual-shifting. And unlike the 9-3, the NG900 doesn't have a gear-selection indicator/repeater in the dash; you have to look down to confirm which gear your-in. That always makes me hestitant to get all "boy-racer" with the a/t stick. With the M-Benz', you always knew you were in some forwards-gear without worrying about slamming it into neutral.
