After unsuccessful attempts to free up tie rod adjuster sleeves (indy had no luck at a recent state inspection either) I decided to replace inner & outter on both sides. Based on how these looked maybe one inner & sleeve was salvageable - but wow.
Both the ends were still sounds but these babies were corroded.
Would've had to come of the car anyway, for $110 the inners weren't worth the gamble.
Pretty straight forward job. Removing the outer tie rod ends, using a pitman arm puller (need one with >2" clearance, 1 3/4" means another trip into town) I see why the nut is re-threaded onto the bottom, until the end breaks free of the steering arm - mangles the end pretty badly (lucky I'm not re-using). Don't know if removing the last couple threads would be an issue. Applied pressure with puller, soaked with PB Blaster, whacked, waited, repeat.
A micrometer is handy for setting up new adjustment sleeve the same as old.
Absent sufficient room for torque wrench for inner rod to steering rack I dabbed some blue locktite on, perhaps to no effect.
I think I'll shoot an entire tube of never-seize or grease in all over the adjusting sleeve, maybe wrap some shrink wrap over the works?
day two was alignment ....
