The car is a 1995 900 SE turbo 2.0L convertible with 120,000 miles and here is my predicament: the other night while driving at high speed on the turnpike the engine overheated and thanks to the %$&$#*$ dashboard lights that go on and off at will, I did not realize I was running hot until the red alert light came on. I pulled over, let the engine cool down, then added water (about 1/2 gallon) to bring it back to level and got back on the road hoping I could drive the 10 mile distance nice and easy to the next exit. right before the toll plaza the car stalled and would not start up again. the temp gauge indicated hotter than hell, the red alert light was on and now my check engine light was flashing. I ended up pushing the car through the toll plaza, got it towed out of the turnpike and then with AAA service towed it home for a grand total of six hours since it first broke down. The check engine light flashes six times which I believe is an O2 sensor fault, the engine does not start although the crankshaft turns and it sounds as if the top end does not turn along with the crankshaft. I had suspected a head gasket leak that the previous owner "fixed" with some Bar's leak when I replaced the water pump 5,000 miles ago, I bought the car with 110,000 miles on it. I did not have the opportunity as of yet to check compression or spark, although at this point it's propably not worth the effort since I am thinking that when I replaced the coolant when I changed the water pump, I washed off any of the goop that sealed the head gasket and as a result I lost coolant, overheated and made the leak worse; then while continuing to drive I got water going through the exaust which messed up the oxygen sensor and propably warped the head or blew off the head gasket to the point where I lost compression resulting to the stall and subsequent no start condition. Would the direct ignition cassette fry up on overheating? has anyone on this board done a head gasket replacement? procedure available? any other thoughts? my love for this car is wearing thin the fun and joy of driving it comes at a high premium in maintainance and repairs. any input will be appreciated!
