A couple of years ago I bought my son a '94 900S. It seemed to be in good shape with 63K miles on it. I still like it alot, but I've spent about $4,000 getting it in shape.
Watch out for:
Frayed or sticking clutch cable.
Backup light switch failure, which takes out the wipers. $20 part that costs hundreds to replace.
Rear shocks punching through the mounts (you're in the desert so this likely won't happen)
Clutch failure.
Oxygen sensor.
Water pump failure, which takes out the serp belt.
Water leak into the trunk. It's from bad tailight gaskets.
I also did the brakes and the exhaust system, but that's normal wear and tear.
I like the car. It has great legroom, is reasonably fun to drive, safe and I imagine it will run a long time. But many things go wrong and they're all $$$ to fix.
