Two years ago, myself and others were confronting the vexing problem that our radios would only come out of the dashboard two inches, and then no more. The standard, and mistaken, gospel at the time on removing the SID unit was to first remove the radio and then push out the SID from the rear with one's hand through the radio access hole.
The spring clips on the sides of the radio were fully outside of the dash and radio cage, so it is not a matter of having a proper radio removal tool or not. Two inches, and still firmly stuck. No tool was going to, or ever did, get the radio out.
Today, my Sirius receiver, with Direct FM adapter attached to the antenna input on the back of the stock radio head unit, were successfully installed in my 2001 Base. At first the radio was firmly stuck at two inches, and no more.
So, first the SID was easily removed, as usual, with only fingernails this time. Then, the cup holder cage (which holds the the SID) was also removed. This cage has three spring prongs on the sides and top, depress those and that cage slides out as well. The back of the radio was finally able to be manipulated with the Mark I Human Hand.
The hangup? The flange of the back cover panel of the head unit, which wraps about a millimeter around the sides of the unit, was catching on the back edge of the radio cage. The radio cage, which surrounds the head unit on four sides, was ever so droopy in the middle of its top, rear edge. The sheet metal of the top of the cage simply was curved down enough, a millimeter or two, so that it firmly catchs the lip of metal on the back edge of the head unit. So, one lifts up on the back of the cage just a tad, and the radio slides right out. Voila! Man, what a major PITA this has been for a couple of years! The top of the head unit showed the scrape marks of multiple attempts to extract it in the past.
I hope this helps anyone else who has been vexed by this problem.
