That's an interesting question. When I changed the oil last weekend I accidently pulled out a wire from the O2 cable splice. The CEL didn't come on until 2 days later so there must be some kind of logic that has to sense the error a few times before it is reported. Same thing happens with problem correction. The CEL will remain on after a problem is fixed until a number of starts have occured.
Sensors can have sudden failure or gradually go bad over time. The ECU must monitor the the number of state changes over time from lean to rich (above & below .45v) and will set a code if it doesn't detect enough changes.
A malfunctioning DIC can burn out a CAT if it overloads it with hydrocarbons but I have never heard of it killing O2 sensors. Sensors usually die from contamination or else die a gradual death.
