Any time when swapping an engine that is not an exact match, you always move all accessories over from your engine to the donor engine.
So you pretty much strip down the new engine to block and head and use yours intake/exhaust manifold and all sensors.
That will minimize any surprises at the end.
Maybe it is just as easy as that you have forgot to attach some ground wires here and there or not hooked up a sensor?
You say that you tried with a working starter? So that tells me the engine is not even cranking over? If the engine would have cranked over, you wouldn't have had to try a new starter?
To label the engine you have to find a flat rusted spot on engine block right by the crank shaft position sensor and scrape off the rust to read engine number.
