...on one tank of gas that is. I am pumped! I regularly got that kind of range on my Jetta TDI (albeit on a 14 gallon tank), but it really is pretty sweet with this car ('96 SET, 17 gallon tank). Filled up with 16.4 gallons for 31mpg. This makes the third time I've broken the 500 mile mark for one tank in this car.
Experimenting with drafting is fun too, but boy does the mileage go down when you speed up. I get about 33mpg at 62mph, and about 27mpg at 78mph. When drafting, I try to stay 5-6 car lengths behind a nice big SUV and generally see a 1-2mpg benefit depending on speed. I'm not going to officially condone drafting because it is, in fact, tailgating...and therefore rude and potentially dangerous. But I still do it occasionally.
If you can avoid flooring the gas at the on ramps, while passing slower traffic, at stop lights, etc., and drive at a moderate speed behind large vehicles, you too can easily get 30+mpg in a 200hp turbo Saab 900!
