serpentine belt replacement

Can anyone please provide feedback on the following: I have a 1999 9-3, base model 2.0. The tensioner pulley failed and the belt of course was not able to power the AC, water pump, or alternator. I replaced the tensioner, tensioner pulley and bought a new belt as well. When I installed the new belt, it seemed to be too big and there was way too much slack, even with the tensioner pin removed. The new belt is the same size as the old belt and at the dealer their replacement belt is also the same size. I used a diagram for routing the belt and noticed that in the diagram the pulley in the center above the crank is used. On my car this pulley is not present, but when using a replacement pulley, it appears that this provides enough tension to remove the slack in the belt. The problem is that installing this pulley seems to be near impossible as there is too little room for installation. Has anyone heard of this pulley simply failing and falling off of the car? Since the pulley is not there now, but it appears that for the belt to fit properly it may have been there before, I am puzzled as to how this can be. Can anyone provide a part number for a shorter belt, if such a belt exists? I would greatly appreciate any help in this matter and thank you for reading this long post. Thanks.
