Oh Joy... feeling has returned to both my thumbs and index fingers after I replaced mine three weeks ago. (well... most of the feeling has returned, and I'm no longer worried about any permanent nerve damage)

The pump you want is made by Walbro... but if you go to your local Carquest parts house, they will sell you a Bosch Pump... in a Carquest Box... and the pump is stamped Walbro.

You'll need to replace the fuel line, and you can get that at Carquest as well. It is not just any fuel line... it is a nylon product and looks like plastic tubing. They sell it in a 19 inch straight section, along with a couple of brass fittings for around twenty bucks. Take a piece of the fuel line in with you, and they'll recognize it in a heartbeat, and walk you right to it on the shelf in the Ford section... If you just tell them you need submersible fuel line, they'll scratch their head and say "Huh" then send you to another parts house, where the guy will say "What?" and you'll spend an entire day looking for something that is right in front of them under "Ford Fuel Line Repair Kit"

You'd think it would be a simple job of slipping the fuel hose off the old pump, and onto the new one, but there are barbs on the pump fitting (and the plastic "T" hose fitting inside the assembly that the hose feeds to from the pump) Carefully cut the hose off the plastic fitting, without scarring the barbs of the fitting.

Before you start the repair job, take the fuel hose you purchased, and take it to a hardware store... go to the spring section, and find a nice long spring that will fit easily inside the hose... it needs to be at least 8 inches long... you'll want to put the spring inside the hose, then bend the hose to a shape that matches the old hose you took out of the assembly with the old pump. There are two different bends to the hose... a large gracefull "U turn" followed by a sharp 90 degree bend all in about 8 inches of hose length (there is enough hose in that 19 inch section you bought so that you can completely screw it up once, and still have enough hose left over to do it right)

You'll need a heat gun. A blow dryer will do in a pinch, but a heat gun will get it up to temp... the spring that you inserted into the hose prevents the hose from collapsing or kinking where you bend it (it keeps it's round form by being supported from inside by the spring) Bend the hose to form the big U-turn (Get aggressive here... bend it into a tight circle) then heat the tube with the heat gun to soften it... remove the heat... let it cool ... then relax the hold you have on the tube to see if it has bent and cooled in the shape you need. Just keep gently bending, heating, bending, and cooling, till you've got the desired shape. Then form the sharp 90 degree bend the same way. Once you've duplicated the bends you need in the hose, remove the spring.

You'll need to heat the end of the hose, then quickly slip it onto the barbed end of the plastic "T" fitting... and press... and heat... and press... and push... and press... then heat the other end and slip it onto the brass fitting on your new pump... amd press... and heat... and push... and heat... and press... and curse up a blue streak that makes your neighbor come over and remind you that he has kids, and his wife would appreciate it if you'd watch your fuckin' language. It takes a great deal of heating and pressing to get the hose fully onto the fittings. Those hose ends and fittings get damned hot... and if you screw up the first time and manage to kink the hose, it gets harder to get the second perfectly shaped hose onto the fittings, because your fingers are tired... and they've been burnt... and it fuckin' hurts... and the mosquitos are biting your ankles... and your wife wants to know if you're ever going to finish that damned pump and come inside for dinner... and about a week later you'll begin to wonder if the feeling will ever return to your fingertips, or if you've cooked the nerves, and your finger tips are going to fall off from necritis... so just take your time, and get it right the first time.
