I have a 1999 9-3 that I've owned for about 6 years. It has about 133000 miles on it and has been very reliable up till now.
A couple of weeks ago we were on the freeway running about 80 mph with the cruise on late at night when the car started surging. It acted as if the ignition was being turned off and then after a second or two would come back on. The check engine light came on and looking in the rear view mirror there appeared to be lots of smoke (steam? even though the temp guage never moved). by the time I got back over to the breakdown lane the car started running normally. The light went out and everything seemed normal. A few days later I noticed a slight ticking in the engine (a lfter I'm sure) and checked the oil. For the first time ever the car was down over two quarts of oil.
A few days later the check engine light came on. My mechanic scanned it and because he got a misfire reading suggested replacing the coil pack which was done.
Afew nights later my wife came home with it and huge clouds of mostly white smoke billowing out the tail pipe. I pulled the plugs and they looked OK, I also pulled the connection from the turbo to the throttle body off and it didn't have any oil residue. A trip to my mechanic and he suggested that a head gasket was the likely culprit. Because of the cost of labor and the fact he couldn't start the job for more than a week I decided to do it myself (11 hours later the labor charge seems much more reasonable!!) I really didn't find anything wrong, but had the head trued up, pressure tested, and replaced the gaskets and head bolts. You guessed it.....still lots of smoke out the tail pipe!! Used a quart of oil in half hour of running!
Plugs still look good, running the car with the turbo disconnected from the throttle body doesn't make any difference. The only thing that isn't really right now is the grommet for the PCV (?) line is broken and I haven't had a chance to get a new one yet. The car has never been oveheated.
Question...is it possible that a seal has just gone away on the exhaust side of turbo and just flooding converter with oil making white?? smoke. The coolant level doesn't change.
Thanks for any help you may have.
Any guidance? One
