Engine died on Viggen

While driving home tonight, my '01 viggen with 115,000 miles started riding very rough and when I stepped on the gas it would try and give power but after a fraction of a second came close to stalling (after jerking a few times). It stalled completely once I stopped at a light and only restarted after 3 or 4 attempts only to make it another 500 yards before completely dying (I was hoping to make it to the dealership which was less than a mile away).
Coincidentally, I had just booked an appointment for an oil change tomorrow! Other than the brake light having come on recently and that the starter seems to catch a little slower, I haven't experience any problems.
Question: Any chance this might be a simple and somewhat inexpensive fix? Or am I likely looking at an engine replacement? Any idea of the cost on that?
Thanks!
