Finally bit the bullet and replaced the rotors (OEM nearly $200 for the pair) I installed a few months back.
They were fine to start, until the stooges at a local tire shop brutalized by wheels over tightening - way tighter than I've seen - it took a 5ft jack handle over by breaker bar to loosen. So besides doing a crappy job balancing my tires my rotors were soon bent.
Shame on me for not checking the bolts for a few weeks.
I incorrectly attributed the thumping / squealing to deposits building on the rotors, as it developed over a week or so.
I pulled the rotors and cleaned between rotor and hub - some junk was packing in there, solved the squeal only. thought maybe they'd wear back to smooth? Seems not.
I put Zimmermans on yesterday (very easy job even in 25F) and all is well!
They look as though they won't show rust, a bonus at half the price.
I'll have a local garage look at the OEMs, maybe they can turn to fix?
