Clean it up ASAP, especially if you are out of customer care program. If you have already opened the valve cover to check amount of sludge, clean up immediately, or at least run with engine flush and change oil. There may be loose sludge particles circulating.

I did the clean-up-job on 9-5 on our yard. First I cleaned up the oil pan, camshaft area, and area surrounding timing chain mechanically using wooden scraper, diesel fuel and dishwashing brush. Instructions on http://www.fixmysaab.com, WIS and Haynes manual were used as a reference.

I assume dropping the oil pan is more complicated on 9-3, as you may need to remove the subframe.

Doing the job without prior experience took 6 hours disassembly/reassembly time, and 4 hours of cleaning up (mechanical removal of sludge from pan, pickup screen, valve cover and from around timing chain on timing chain cover).

I finished up by running with engine flush.

Service break was two weeks, as I was only able to work on weekends. Cost of goods (oils, filters, tools) was 70 euros ($100), as I already had proper jack, axle stands and most of the tools required.

To conclude. This job is DIY-able, but I you don't feel comfortable on working on awkward positions or working with mechanical components, you'd better find an engine specialist. They will also be able to estimate condition of bearings and chains and replace those if needed.
