I agree...no reason to worry if a head gasket was replaced, given the pedigree of trhis particular engine. Many 2.0 and 2.3s have had head gasket replacements due to oil leaks or improper head torquing. Neither of these situations are such that they could cause damage to the engine in other ways.
The early 1978 99 Turbos had a history of blwoing head gaskets and warped heads due to overheating. Rule of thumb was third time it over heated you needed a new head. I bought one that had it's second head gasket and I had to replace the head when a rad hose let lose.
Sounds to me like you got a good deal and if you're still worried, a compression check should varify a healthy engine.
